WHAT IS A MEDICARE SUPPLEMENT INSURANCE POLICY?

A Medicare Supplement policy (also referred to as “Medigap policy”) is health insurance designed to supplement Original Medicare coverage. Medicare Supplements cover some of the things original Medicare doesn’t cover. Insurance companies may only sell you a mandated or standardized Medicare Supplement policy. Since the plans (A through L) are mandated, it is easy to compare the plans across different companies. Medicare Supplement policies are bound by Federal and State laws. These laws help to safeguard those who are looking to purchase a Medicare Supplement policy. Plans A through L have very distinct differences. Even though Medicare Supplement plans will be the same among insurance companies, their prices may be different for the same plan. This is why it is always prudent to compare insurance companies.

WHAT IS A MEDICARE ADVANTAGE PLAN?

Medicare Advantage Plans are health insurance that operate similarly to HMO’s and PPO’s. These plans are monitored and approved by Medicare, but are administered through private insurance companies. These plans are known as “Medicare part C”. Every Medicare Advantage Plan must cover at least the same services that are covered by Original Medicare. It is important to note, Advantage Plans are not the same as Medicare Supplement Plans! Advantage Plans may have coinsurance, co-pays, and deductibles, but may also offer extra benefits that supplements don’t.
